Today we had a wonderful and informative visit from the Canal & River Trust.  Our visitor, Katie, held an interactive assembly in the morning for Year 1-6 all about water safety and also the history of the section of the canal which stretches between Liverpool and Wigan.  This section of the canal is 250 years old this October, and Katie came to tell us all about the celebrations taking place to mark this occasion.  During the assembly, children were quizzed on their knowledge of the canal and water safety, as well as being able to learn new information. Katie shared with the children about a family fun day of celebrations taking place at Burscough Wharf and Burscough Library on Saturday 19th October to celebrate the 250th anniversary, and invited the children to join in with a creative competition to design their own piece of bunting.  Children were given a piece of bunting to design and decorate how they wish in class, or at home, which will then be included in decorating the celebrations at Burscough Wharf. A child from each class will then be chosen to win a goody bag for their efforts.

After the assembly, children in Reception and Year 1 completed a workshop with Katie about how the canal was made and who was involved.  The children took part in a sand and water activity which also included role play and actions.

After lunch, the children in Year 3 worked with Katie, and her colleague Gill, in groups to build their own canals and learn more about the history of the canal to support their learning in Geography. The children shared all the knowledge they have learnt so far in their Geography lessons which really impressed Katie and Gill.
