PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) is a crucial part of a child’s education. At Burscough Village Primary School we provide a specifically tailored PSHE curriculum that is both broad and balanced, and meets the unique needs of the children in our school. PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society who can make informed choices. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
At Burscough Village Primary School, we have designed our own unique PSHE curriculum using the PSHE Associations guidance and quality assured resources. As the children were heavily involved in creating these plans with the PSHE Coordinator, they are tailored to the children’s interests alongside the particular needs of each year group.
PSHE is taught every week and the curriculum is split into three core themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. The children will meet these themes throughout the course of the year and they are built upon as the children move through school. They cover important life skills and promote inclusion within the diverse world that we live in.
Planning for PSHE is both proactive and reactive and assessment is ongoing. Teachers will respond to the ever-changing needs of their class and confront specific issues with them. We have a well-resourced Nurture Room which can be accessed to support children’s particular needs.
Assemblies and collective worship cover a diverse range of PSHE topics and children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured. We often invite guest speakers into school to share their real-life experiences with the children. Children are able to access a variety of extra-curricular clubs to support their mental and physical wellbeing. We also arrange trips and experiences within the local community and further afield. An example of this was an aspirational Careers Fair that was held for Y5 and Y6. These types of enrichments are vital to our inspiring PSHE curriculum.
Pupil Voice is an important driver for Burscough Village Primary School. All children have the opportunity to be voted for Pupil, Eco and Sports Council members. Their ideas help support decision making within the school and they take part in a variety of projects every year supporting our school, the local community and wider society.
