'Learning a new language is about developing our intercultural understanding.'
Here at Burscough Village Primary School, we support the view that learning a modern foreign language is an entitlement for all pupils, regardless of their background and ability, and therefore all pupils are encouraged to develop their full potential in Spanish. Learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures, fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. We focus on practical communication in our Spanish lessons: forming basic conversations, taking turns and becoming more confident with Spanish sentence structures. They take part in role-play, conversations and question and answer work, sing songs and play games, take turns and experiment creatively with language.
Spanish is delivered by a specialist teacher, Señora Culshaw. Spanish lessons take place once per week in key stage 2, and last between 45 minutes and 1 hour. Spanish is sequenced carefully, taking into consideration the KS2 languages curriculum. The skills are built up gradually over five different strands: speaking, listening, writing, reading and grammar. The Spanish curriculum is linked with the knowledge and skills the children develop in their English lessons. Assessment is always ongoing in Spanish so that we can adapt and respond to pupils needs. Subject and school leaders monitor the impact of our curriculum provision through completing regular monitoring, that includes listening to the voice of our children. The children are formally assessed at the end of each term. We have the same high expectations for all our children. However, we fully understand that some children will need more support accessing this subject, our responsive teaching style and learning scaffolds will make sure all children are able to access Spanish effectively. In each lesson, we ask children to expand sentences and explain their own speech to build on and apply their knowledge. Subject-specific implementation. In year five and year six, children are required to use a bi-lingual dictionary which will aid their skills in other areas of the curriculum as well as developing independence in their learning.
